British Red Cross: Paediatric First Aid for Choking

Cartoon first aid choking graphic from the British Red CrossAs you will be aware, babies and young children like to explore through putting things in their mouths. And during the festive season, whilst every precaution is taken, decorations and additional craft activities may mean that little ones can get hold of things they shouldn’t, which they could choke on.

If a child in your setting is choking and they are aged over one year:

1. Encourage them to cough, give up to five back blows.
2. Give up to five abdominal thrusts.*
3. Call 999 if the blockage does not dislodge.

*Never give abdominal thrusts to a baby under 12 months old.
