Festive First Aid Tip From the British Red Cross - Choking

As you will be aware, babies and young children like to explore through putting things in their mouths. And during the festive season, decorations and additional craft activities may mean that little ones can get hold of things they shouldn’t, which they could choke on.

If a child in your care is choking and they are aged over one year:

1. Encourage them to cough, give up to five back blows.
2. Give up to five abdominal thrusts.*
3. Call 999 if the blockage does not dislodge.

*Never give abdominal thrusts to a baby under 12 months old
