DfE to Press Ahead with Childcare Reforms

The Johnson government had begun a programme looking at reforms to the childcare sector, particularly seeking ways to bring down its cost to parents. While providers have consistently argued for funding levels to be raised, this has so far not met with favour in the Treasury. The incoming Truss government has indicated it intends to continue looking at reforms, particularly with respect to ratios and other elements of ‘deregulation’.

Truss was Childcare Minister a decade ago under the Cameron government and the Childminder Agencies scheme was her brainchild. Judging by her radical economic reforms, it appears that she is not afraid of big, controversial changes, however, the Department for Education has also been clear that they expect any changes to be evidence led. The existing consultation on ratios has reportedly received thousands of responses already and how the government reacts will provide a critical insight into their approach.

There is always an opportunity with an incoming government for the sector to make its voice heard. New ministers are eager to make their mark and to adopt policy proposals that will have a popular impact. They are also looking to understand their briefs and develop expertise quickly. The childcare sector is potentially well placed to advise this government on what needs to be done, but what happens next will remain to be seen.
